What is CDL?

A Commercial driver’s license, or CDL, is required to drive and operate specific types of commercial vehicles. There are different categories to determine if a vehicle will require a CDL. Please note that each state may have different regulations.

A CDL allows the driver to operate vehicles with a gross weight of more than 26,001 pounds. The license can only be held in one state and the driver must be 21 years of age in order to obtain the license. Additional guidelines and laws are in effect to protect the commercial driver as well as other drivers on the road.

Please read our blog entitled Truck Chassis Classifications for a full breakdown of classification categories.

How Does “Under CDL” Differ?

Under CDL allows the driver to drive a commercial vehicle with a gross weight of less than 26,000 pounds. The most common vehicles that are under CDL are as follows: SUVs, cars, vans. Dodge Ram and Ford F550 are recognized as under CDL.

Here at Custom Truck One Source, we have a group of trucks that are under CDL.
