Terex Buyer’s Guide

The Terex lineup spans multiple models of bucket trucks and digger derricks, each engineered for different applications and spec thresholds. For fleet and purchasing managers, choosing the wrong unit means underperforming equipment and avoidable downtime.

This guide cuts through the lineup complexity and points you to the right unit for your application. Whether you’re looking for distribution-class aerials or heavy-duty digger derricks, understanding how Terex organizes its model families makes the difference between equipment that delivers and one that falls short.

At Custom Truck One Source, we make it easy to purchase, rent or lease Terex equipment once you’ve identified the right configuration.

Terex Bucket Trucks

The Terex bucket truck lineup is organized by application. Distribution work, forestry operations and transmission jobs each require different working heights and side-reach capabilities.

Optima TC55

The Optima TC55 is the primary distribution-class bucket truck for utility maintenance crews and electric cooperatives. It delivers 60 feet of working height, 700 pounds of platform capacity and the stacked boom configuration that reduces stowed height compared to traditional designs. That configuration improves weight distribution and makes fleet standardization more practical.

The TC55 offers 42 feet and 7 inches of side reach and a 2,000-pound material handler capacity for crews handling transformers, cable reels and other heavy components. The equipment is electrically rated for work near energized conductors and available in 4×2 or 4×4 chassis configurations. The 4×4 option provides off-road access for rural distribution work where paved access ends before the worksite begins.

XT Pro Series

The XT Pro is the bucket truck for forestry crews and line clearance contractors. It combines working height with the maneuverability that forestry work demands. The shortest wheelbase in its class makes tight-access tree work feasible, and dual hydraulic tool connections at the platform eliminate the need to route lines from the truck bed.

  • The XT Pro 56 delivers 61 feet of working height with an 11-foot chip box.
  • The XT Pro 60 extends the working height to 65 feet, with the largest chip box measuring 12 feet 6 inches.
  • The XT Pro 70 provides 75 feet of working height and 49.9 feet of overcenter side reach.

All XT Pro units feature rectangular bi-axial epoxy resin filament-wound fiberglass booms and dual hydraulic tool connections at the platform for chainsaw and pruning equipment.

TL Series and Hi-Ranger TM125

Transmission work demands extreme working heights, extended side reach and higher material-handling capacity than distribution or forestry applications require. The Terex TL80/112 and Terex Hi-Ranger TM125 deliver these capabilities through different engineering approaches.

The TL80/112 is Terex’s newest transmission aerial platform. It delivers 112 feet of working height, 63.3 feet of side reach, 700 pounds of platform capacity and a 2,000-pound material handler. This combination of horizontal reach and lifting capacity makes it the choice for crews working large transmission structures with heavy transformer installations.

Choose the TM125 when maximum height is the primary requirement for tall transmission towers and substation structures. Select the TL80/112 when you need greater horizontal reach and material handling capacity for installation work on lower transmission spans.

Terex Digger Derricks

Terex divides its digger derrick lineup into two series based on sheave height and lifting capacity. The Commander series handles distribution-class work, and the General series tackles transmission-class pole setting and infrastructure projects.

Commander Series

The Commander is the Terex distribution digger, suited for electric cooperatives, telecom infrastructure and standard distribution pole work.

  • Commander 4047: The Terex Commander 4047 delivers 47.4 feet of sheave height in TM winch configuration, 35.5 feet of horizontal reach, and hi-rail capability for rail-adjacent utility work.
  • Commander 6060: The Terex Commander 6060 extends sheave height to 60 feet with 50.3 feet of horizontal reach and a digging radius spanning 21.3 to 34.3 feet.

Both Commander models feature continuous, unrestricted rotation and dual-lift cylinders to maintain load stability during pole-setting operations. These units mount on standard Class 7 chassis and handle most distribution pole work.

General Series

The General series is the heavy-duty transmission digger for large utility contractors and infrastructure operations that require greater sheave height and lifting capacity than the Commander series provides.

  • General 65: The Terex General 65 provides 65.1 feet of sheave height, 42,110 pounds of max lifting capacity, 55.1 feet of horizontal reach, and 36.4 feet of digging reach.
  • General 80: The Terex General 80 extends the sheave height to 80.3 feet, and has a capacity of 26,600 pounds at 10 feet fully retracted. The General 80 includes a hydraulic tilt pole guide and load moment limiter as standard features.

Both General models are compatible with multiple chassis makes and models. The General 80 is also available in a tracked configuration for difficult terrain. Fleets performing transmission pole setting, large structure work or operating in challenging terrain require the General series’ additional reach and capacity. Distribution crews working at standard pole heights below 60 feet will find that the Commander series delivers the necessary performance.

Specifications to Evaluate Before You Choose a Terex Unit

Keep these specifications in mind as you decide on the best Terex unit for your crew:

  • Working height is the total vertical reach from ground level to the platform’s maximum elevation. Distribution work typically requires 55 to 65 feet, while transmission applications require 100+ feet.
  • Side reach refers to the lateral boom extension from the truck’s centerline. This spec determines your ability to work around obstacles and position over structures.
  • Sheave height is specific to digger derricks. It indicates the maximum height to which the lifting cable can be raised. This spec determines whether a unit qualifies as distribution-class or transmission-class.
  • Material handler capacity is the maximum weight the jib can lift for transformers, cable reels and other heavy components. Distribution work typically requires a 1,500- to 2,000-pound capacity.
  • Platform capacity is the combined weight limit for crew members, tools and materials that the bucket can support simultaneously.
  • Electrical rating defines the equipment’s insulation class, designated as Class A, B or C based on the maximum voltage the equipment is rated to work near.
